On October 8, 2025, the Akuapim South Municipal Assembly hosted a Water and Sanitation Forum at the Assembly Hall in Aburi, uniting community leaders, stakeholders, and residents in a bold mission to transform sanitation across the municipality. The event buzzed with energy as speakers unveiled ambitious plans to tackle waste, improve hygiene, and empower communities.
In his opening remarks, the Honorable Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Paul Osae Offei made it known that, the government of Ghana has terminated the Zoomlion community sweeping project. “It’s now our collective responsibility to partner with local leaders and champion sanitation initiatives to rid our communities of filth,” he declared, igniting a call to action.
The Queen Mother of Adonten, Awo Adwoa Amene, in her submissions, urged residents to embrace new sanitation policies wholeheartedly. Saying, “Anyone who defies these measures will face strict consequences,” she warned. She encouraged community members to report saboteurs to the authorities, emphasizing unity in the fight for a cleaner municipality.
Hon. Offei announced the launch of National Sanitation Day for Akuapim South, set for October 18, 2025. To drive this initiative, dynamic youth groups, dubbed “Ghetto Boys,” will be recruited from various communities to form a sanitation taskforce. Their mission is to clear overgrown pathways, desilt gutters, and support communal activities, transforming the municipality’s landscape one task at a time.
Assembly members contributed bold ideas to amplify the effort. Proposals included deploying tricycles to suBurban areas for efficient waste collection and issuing environmental warrants to offenders as a deterrent. These suggestions sparked lively discussions, showcasing the Assembly’s commitment to innovative solutions.
However, not all voices were in harmony. A representative of Nana Otoobour Djan Kwasi expressed the Chief’s frustration over neglected roadside sanitation policies. Undeterred, the representative announced a massive cleanup exercise on November 1, 2025, to prepare for the vibrant Odwira Festival, rallying the community to join the effort.
The Environmental Health Officer highlighted details of National Sanitation Day, a dedicated day for waste segregation, gutter desilting, and sweeping key areas like principal streets, markets, durbar grounds, hospitals, and churches. He urged Assembly members to mobilize their communities, form sanitation taskforces, and partner with traditional rulers to amplify the campaign. “Personal hygiene is the cornerstone of a healthy community,” he stressed, calling for a cultural shift toward cleanliness. He revealed that community taskforces will undergo specialized training before being deployed to lead sanitation efforts in their neighborhoods, ensuring grassroots impact.
Hon. Osae shared another groundbreaking update: the implementation of the government’s 10% water policy. He invited Assembly members from communities facing water challenges to submit requests for swift action, signaling a proactive approach to resolving water access issues.
In her closing remarks, the Queen Mother of the land praised the organizers for their visionary leadership. She charged the taskforce to work with unwavering integrity, resisting any disruptions from community naysayers.
